SPRINGS
DANCE COMPANY

The
company was founded in 1979 by Martin Blogg (author of Dance in
the Christian Faith) and Angela Hardcastle, at Middlesex
University. At the time, the style of the company was being
explored, but was classically biased. Their aim, however, was very
clear: to communicate the Christian faith-using dance.
In 1984 Candy Hadler and Ruth Dawson became the new artistic
directors, and the company became a registered charity. The
company style became increasingly influenced by contemporary and
theatre dance. As Springs became more recognised, the workload in
churches increased not only in Britain but also abroad.
A further change of leadership occurred in 1992 when directorship
was handed to Francis Clarke and Miranda Groves. Within their
stylistic influences, these new Artistic Directors sought to
provide structured and detailed guidelines for the educational
work of SDC.
SDC's dancers/choreographers and teachers have continued to
progress to become Artistic Directors enabling the company to
prolong its existence and for fresh ideas to be continually
explored. In January 2000, Cathy Sincock (current Artistic
Director) was appointed.
The repertoire of the company at present is a combination of
previous and new works in contemporary, jazz and theatre. Hence a
wide variety exists to cater for all audiences. All the dances aim
to challenge and educate both Christians and non-Christians about
the Christian faith. The dances include works, which are
light-hearted, dramatic, beautiful, symbolic, evangelistic, and
meditative, and all deal with biblical, social, and personal
issues.
