CHERYL PORTER

"I'm going to sing when the spirit says sing and obey the spirit of the Lord."

Described as one of the most promising voices of the new generation, internationally acclaimed vocalist, Cheryl Porter has developed into what many critics describe as "a blend between Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington and Mahalia Jackson."
With a rich and powerful voice that has matured beyond her years and deeply rooted in the blues and gospel tradition, Cheryl's expressive voice is that of a storyteller, "She takes you on an emotional ride…she bears her soul…she tells her secrets."

Myron MyersAfter winning a full vocal scholarship to Northern Illinios University, she began her classical vocal training under the tutelage of Drs. Edna Williams and Myron Myers.
Cheryl admits,"My dream was to be the great black opera diva, to travel the world performing Puccini, Rossini ect;…then after living in Italy I realized that European music was not the story I wanted to tell, it did not allow me to say all the things I had to say as an artist... I rediscovered myself in the Negro Spiritual and it inevitably led to gospel, blues, soul and jazz…which is my history…the music of my ancestors."
Cheryl's wide scope of vocal capabilities and sophisticated blend of jazz, blues and gospel have led her to collaborate with such legendary musicians as Tito Puente, Marshall Royal, Dave Brubeck, Paolo Conte, Katia Ricciarelli, Claudio Roditi, Bob Mintzer of the Yellow Jackets, Hal Crook, The Brecker Brothers, Ron Modell, David Crosby, Blues Brothers 2000 and also as backup singer for pop star Mariah Carey.
